Alexandrite

June birthstoneIn addition to being the birthstone for June alexandrite is also the traditional gift to celebrate a 55th wedding anniversary.

Alexandrite is believed to promote prosperity and longevity. Since it changes depending on its setting, this is a stone for someone who is creative too as creative people often find interesting ways to adapt to their surroundings to create something new.

Though you may not be familiar with it, alexandrite is one of the rarest and most valuable gemstones in the world.

Alexandrite Origins
Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl and it was named after Russian Czar Alexander II. In fact, it was the official gemstone because one unique feature: it changes color depending on the light that touches it. So in natural light it appears as a bluish green color but under indoor lights it turns to a purplish red color.

According to the American Gem Society, this unique feature of changing colors from green to red led to it being Imperial Russia’s official gemstone. In those days the national colors of Russia were green and red.

“This chameleon-like behavior is the result of its uncommon chemical composition— which includes traces of chromium, the same coloring agent found in emerald. The unlikelihood of these elements combining under the right conditions makes alexandrite one of the rarest, costliest gems.”

Alexandrite is one of only three gemstones that change color (sapphire and garnet do too) and is more valuable than diamonds.

Alexandrite Price

If you want the real stone, you’ll have to pay. Top-quality Russian alexandrite has sold for as much as $10,000 for one carat. Lab created alexandrite is affordable and is made into a variety of jewelry such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings.

Pearl Birthstone

Pearl is a birthstone that is not actually a stone like other birthstones. Instead it’s called “gem material” because the June birthstone comes from an oyster.

Pearls are valued as precious gems for their rarity and luster.

Origins of Pearls

June birthstone jewelryThe earliest use of pearl in English, documented around 1340, referred to the “pupil” or “lens” of the eye. They look similar to the white of our eyes which have an iridescent quality.

Pearl is seen as a symbol of purity, charity, integrity, truth, and loyalty.

Price

As with all birthstones, the cost depends on the quality, what what metals are used. Freshwater pearls are the least expensive and Seapearls are the highest priced and prized pearls. If you go cheap on pearls though they can rub off and look terrible after a single scratch. They can also come off the strand it made with cheap materials. Don’t waste your money and read the reviews from people who have purchased pearls.
A simple way to check if a pearl is real or imitation is the “Tooth Test”. Gently slide the pearl across the front of your teeth; if it feels smooth then it’s a fake, as real pearls feel gritty.
According to Adriano Genisi, “a necklace of real slightly round freshwater cultured pearls can cost only $15.00, but a necklace made of South Seapearls with fantastic record dimensions that go from 16mm to 20mm can be sold at Sotheby’s for incredible $2,310,000.00.”

Moon stone

There are two secondary birthstones for June, the moonstone and the Alexandrite.

Origins of moonstone

Moonstone was named by the Roman natural historian Pliny, who wrote that moonstone’s shimmery appearance shifted with the phases of the moon. Today, the finest moonstones come from Sri Lanka. Since these sources of high-quality blue moonstones have essentially been mined out, prices have risen sharply.

Price

The more intense the color, and the larger and more transparent the stone, the higher the price. The price can range from $20 to about$100, depending on the qualities, size and shape of the stone.

Mysticism and Sleep

As its name implies, moonstone is closely associated with lunar mystery and magic. Its calming, balancing energies can supposedly attune to natural biological rhythms. Moonstone acts as the ultimate fertility crystal by sparking passion in new lovers and reuniting old ones.

Also known as the Traveler’s Stone, like the moon that leads sailors to a safe journey, moonstone is believed to protect travelers at night. It could be called the sleep stone too because moonstone is used to treat insomnia and sleepwalking, encourage sound sleep and encourage good dreams.

With the popularity of the Boho look, moonstones make and ideal gift for a woman who is more earthy or bohemian…
